Saints Take Down #2 Herkimer

Before Wednesday, no one had even been able to score a goal against the Herkimer Community College women's soccer team.

North Country Community Community College did one better.

The Saints scored twice and beat the Generals.

Morgan Fountain tallied twice in the win over the No. 2 team in the country.

"Coming into the game, they had scored 50 goals and hadn't given up one. They were 8-0," North Country coach Kent Egglefield said. "So not only were we the first to score on them, we were the first to beat them."

The Saints had to overcome an early setback to do it.

Nine minutes in, a Herkimer player crossed the ball, and a North Country player tried to head it out of the box. But the ball went into the Saints' net, handing the Generals an early lead. Kendra Henry was credited with the goal.

Egglefield said his players did a good job shaking off the fluke play. 17 minutes later, Fountain tied the game with her first goal. Sarah Slattery assisted on the play.

"Once Morgan tied it, we finally started to believe," Egglefield said. "Once we saw they were human after all, everyone started to believe we could do it."

Fountain put in the game-winner in the 30th minute of the second half. Goalkeeper Jadeen Chisholm assisted on the goal.

Herkimer owned a 25-9 advantage in shots.

"We buckled down defensively, had a good game plan defensively. We knew they'd get shots and we just tried to take away their lanes and make sure Jadeen could see them clearly." Egglefield said.

"We stressed the importance of shooting the ball offensively. We had to make all our shots count because we knew we wouldn't get many. Both shots came from the outside from about 20 yards out. We did what we set out to do and actually accomplished what we wanted. Morgan made it happen for us today," said Egglefield

Chisholm finished with 14 saves.

"Our defense was amazing today," Egglefield stated. "Alexa, Taylor, Abby, and Alli were all fantastic."
