Saints Give Broome a Fight

The North Country Community College women's soccer team hung around with one of the region's most vaunted teams Saturday.

SUNY Broome, which entered the match at 4-0 and having outscored opponents 30-1, iced the Saints with a late penalty kick to win 3-1.

"This is the closest any team has played them this year," North Country coach Kent Egglefield said. "The penalty kick sealed it for us. It was a dumb penalty kick that we gave up."

Malone's Morgan Fountain cut the Saints' disadvantage to one at 23:48 with her 7th goal of the season. Karlee Deaver assisted on the play.

But Rosemary Zelenyak tallied at the 76:53 mark of the second half to give the Hornets a two-goal cushion.

SUNY Broome managed a 2-0 lead at the halftime break.

"They controlled the first half," Egglefield said. "We were lucky to be down only 2-0."

"But the girls got passionate about it at halftime. They played with nothing to lose. It turned out to be the best half of soccer we've played all season."said Egglefield

"I know its a loss, but I couldn't be more proud of how resilient the girls were today"stated Egglefield. " We came out like a deer caught in the headlights but we held firm and responded in the second half."

"We start 7 freshman and none of them had ever seen a team like that." Egglefield added. "I thought they handled their speed and pressure well. I am very proud of them all."

The Saints hit the road Saturday for a match with rival Mohawk Valley.
