Saints Men’s Soccer Open Season with Win over Jamestown

The Saints competed in their first match of the 2014 season hosting the Jayhawks of Jamestown Community College.  Both teams shared possession of the ball for the first 15 minutes, it was then that the Saints began to press and test the Jayhawk goal keeper.  Sophomore captain Justin Kellett broke through for the home side in the 20th minute as he put his head on the end of a corner kick taken by Andrew Lontis and re-directed in to the back of the net.  The Saints continued to test the back line for the visitors and were able to break through again at the 41 minute mark.  It was some creative play in the midfield by Nickenson Pierre that put the ball on the feet of Matthew Woodcock who fired a shot low and hard past the reach of the goalkeeper.  The Saints took a 2 - 0 lead in to the break while outshooting the Jayhawks 8 -1.

The second half started much like the first with both teams pushing back and forth trying to take over the game.  It was in the 58th minute when the Saints were able to capitalize on another scoring opportunity.  A ball was played through the Jayhawks 18 yard box from a set piece and then sent back into the mix by Eddy Fleurmond.  This created a scrum in front of the goal where Justin Kellett sent the ball to the back of the net.  The Jayhawks showed resilience in the second half as they were able to beat the Saints defense and find the back of the net in the 72nd minute. The Saints outshot the Jayhawks 14 – 4 in the contest, Connor Campbell had 3 saves in net for the home side.

The Saints play next at Cayuga Community College on Saturday September 6th.
