Batavia, NY- The North Country Saints Women's soccer team's impressive season and playoff run came to a halt Saturday night with a 4-0 loss to Onondaga CC in the Region III Championship game at Genesee Community College.
After having not allowed more than 2 goals in a game all season and posting 8 shutouts, the Saints surrendered 2 in each half of the championship.
"We gave up 10 goals in 13 games this year." said Head Coach Kent Egglefield. "And in the biggest game of the season we give up nearly half of that. I wish I had an answer for what happened. But regardless, you can't win if you can't score."
This was North Country's second time ever appearing in the Region III Championship. Onondaga will now move on to play for the National Championship, while the Saints season comes to an abrupt end.
"I truly believed we were going to win it. We all did." said Egglefield. "In 2021 when we went, I believed we were going to win, but when we lost, we took a lot of pride being the first women's team to make the final. But this one hurts different. We picked the wrong time to have our worst game of the season and realize it was ours to take."
The Saints were outshot in the final 11-1. Hannah Gaddor made 7 saves for the Saints.
"This game will not diminish what these girls accomplished this year. They have been amazing all season. We were top 5 nationally in team offense and defense this season. I hope these girls understand what they did. We had our first losing season in 10 years last year. To be as good and go as far as we did this year should be something they remember always." added Egglefield.
"My sophomore captains, Riley Paschke, Auriannna Lastowski, Franziska Moderegger, and Brionna Foster, cannot be replaced. The turnaround they accomplished this season is unmatched. They have been outstanding players, leaders, and most of all people."
The Saints end their season at 8-4-2. Thank you to all the students, fans, and parents that support us every year!
