Shorthanded Saints Rebound From First Loss

Shorthanded Saints Rebound From First Loss

No rest for the weary as the Saints Women's Soccer team was back in action just 24 hours after their first loss of the season. Down five players, the Saints travelled to Word of Life and rebounded with a 5-1 victory.

"We were shorthanded with only two subs and some of them were tired and banged up, too," stated Saints Coach Kent Egglefield. "We were very tired and sluggish and it showed as we played probably our worst game of the season today. Yet we still found a way to get it done."

Carlijn vander Smeede struck first for the Saints on a beautifully placed shot off a feed from Jenny Dejung. Fifteen minutes later, Emily Jablonski chested in an Abby Hart cross to put the Saints up 2-0.

Just before half, the Huskies drew within one goal on a break away to make it 2-1.

Of the goal, Egglefield said, "That was the strangest play I have ever seen in 23 years of coaching and we'll just leave it at that."

After the half, the Saints finally got their shape back and Skyelin Bradford and Mikenna Valentine scored just 30 seconds apart for a 4-1 lead. van der Smeede and Hart picked up the assists.

Marie Sibbing capped off the scoring with a direct kick from 25 yards out to seal the win at 5-1.

Alison Van Shaik made 6 saves in net.

The Saints are on the road this Wednesday at Fulton-Montgomery.

Our GOAT of the Game goes to Carlijn van der Smeede from Nootdorp, Netherlands. Playing in a different position today with players out, Carlijn helped settle the midfield and controlled possession. She also added a goal and an assist. Congrats Carlijn! We're very thankful and proud of you!
