Saints Lose Heartbreaker

The North Country Saints women came out firing on Wednesday, but were unable to hang on against #2 Herkimer Community College.

The Saints opened the scoring just 4:23 into the contest when a Chloe Nott corner kick found the back of the net.

"Having been shut out 4 of the last 5 contests that was a huge start against a team like Herk" said Saints coach Kent Egglefield.

The Saints weren't done as just 4 minutes later Julia Anderson took a feed from Nott and placed it into the upper left corner for a 2-0 lead.

"Coming out with 2 quick goals was a great start. But its Herkimer and we knew they'd make a run at some point." stated Egglefield.

That run began with just over 6 minutes left in the half as Herk's Jenna Rogers put home a corner kick.

After the half the Saints came out hard tying to extend the lead but two key saves by the Herkimer goalkeeper kept it a 2-1 game.

"We needed that 3rd goal. That would've been huge in protecting the lead and maintaining confidence." Egglefield said.

But it wasn't to be on this day as Herkimer put home the tying goal with 28 minutes to go and followed with the game winner just 3 minutes later.

The Saints didn't quit though. A fantastic stop by the Herkimer keeper on Jasmin Barnes with 90 seconds left preserved the win. On the day the Saints outshot the generals 14-11. Shelby Egnaczyk made 8 saves in net.

"We gave it everything. They left it all on the field today. I can't be upset with this contest especially when most didn't give us a chance against a top ranked team.' concluded Egglefield.

Saints Athletic Director, Chad LaDue added,"It was a great game to watch today. I think the girls played really hard and showed that they can compete with anyone in the nation."

The Saints take to the road this Saaturday at Adirondack Community College. Gametime is 1:30.
