Saints Fall to #2 Broome

Saints Fall to #2 Broome

Despite a strong effort from the entire team, the Saints dropped a 3-0 contest to the nation's 2nd ranked team, Broome Community College on Saturday.

The Hornets came out fast, and despite two strong saves by Saints keeper Shelby Egnaczyk, Broome got on the board early scoring six minutes into the contest.

"They came out really fast. We haven't seen a team this good all year and we were on our heals from the get-go trying to get a feel for the pace." said Saints Coach Kent Egglefield.

The Hornets would strike again just eight minutes later when Broome forward Kaelyn Michitti found the net for the second time. The Saints would then find their comfort zone and held off the rest of the first half behind incredible goalkeeping from Egnaczyk.

After the half, the Saints came out strong with their first real threats on goal coming in the first few minutes. A great run and move by Kate Stevens nearly cut the lead to one with a shot going just wide. With 27 minutes left in the game, Broome's Michitti completed her hat-trick scoring her 3rd and the game's final goal.

On the day Egnaczyk was steller stopping 20 shots from the strong Hornet's attack.

"Without Shelby, that game is 10-0." said Egglefield. "I've said it several times, and now I am hearing it from opposing players and coaches too.... she is the best in all of Region 3. There is no one I'd rather have than her."

The center of the field was strong for the Saints on the day as well.

"Taylor Winch, Jenny Ward, and Julia Anderson did a pretty solid job controlling the gaps and containing their runs. Broome is just an outstanding, well-coached program." stated Egglefield. "I'm proud of the girl's effort today regardless of the outcome."

The Saints return to action next Saturday at home versus rival Mohawk Valley. Game time is 1pm.
