NCCC Women Fall in Regionals

NCCC Women Fall in Regionals

The North Country Community College women hosted their first regional soccer playoff Saturday, but Finger Lakes Community College managed to ruin the occasion with a 1-0 victory.

The Saints, 10-4-1, overall; 9-4-1 in NJCAA Region III play, were seeded eighth just ahead of the Lakers, 9-6-1. However, Finger Lakes has gone deep into the postseason the past three years.

"We played well, except for the start when we seemed to sit back too much," NCCC Coach Kent Egglefield said. "We didn't counter very well from the start."

The contest remained scoreless until the 31:51 mark when Gabrielle Kwiatek, a transfer from NCAA Div. II Nyack College, scored. The goal came off a corner kick.

"We didn't mark up on the corner... plain and simple." said Egglefield "We didn't come off the posts either."

Daniele Ogrodowsk made that lead stick in net. She recorded her sixth shutout of the season with four saves.

North Country's best scoring opportunity came with six minutes to play in regulation. Courtney Boyea ripped a direct kick from 20 yards out that Ogrodowski managed to tip away.

"I don't know how she stopped it. It was a beautiful shot and she went flat out to get it," Egglefield said.

Finger Lakes held an 10-9 edge in shots with NCCC's Shelby Egnaczyk making six saves.

Sarah Slattery had an incredible game for the Saints locking up man to man with the Regions leading scorer Brittany Maggio and holding her without a point.

"Its a hard pill to swallow right now... I truly believe we have a team that could have won a championship." said Egglefield. "Its so tough with how hard everyone has worked all season to just accept that its over."

I would like to thank everyone for all the support this season. The excitement the fans and families helped stir really added alot of excitement to this season. I especially want to thank my Seniors for their two years here at NCCC. They leave as the first class to make Regional play two consecutive seasons as well as the first to host a playoff game. You will all be greatly missed! Special thanks also to Jerrad Dumont and Chad Ladue for everything they've done to help make us successful this season. Looking forward to 2015 already!

Thanks Everyone-

Kent
