Saints Erupt in Second Half

Saints Erupt in Second Half

The North Country Saints Women's soccer team closed out an incredibly successful regular season Tuesday night with a 6-0 pounding of rival Clinton. After a slow start on a cold rainy night, the Saints finally broke through 23 minutes in when Sam Richards pounded home her first career goal off an Abbey Lapage corner kick. Despite dominating possession and an 8-0 shot advantage,  that would be the only goal of the half as the Saints couldn't break through again.

"We controlled the game from the start." said Kent Egglefield. "We just couldn't find the back of the net and their keeper made a few great saves."

The second half would prove to be a different story as the Saints would score just 3:30 in with Morgan Fountain converting a great pass from Courtney Boyea

It would stay 2-0 for the next 20 minutes before Kodi Perkins headed home a cross from Fountain and the rout was on. Tori Bennett(Fountain) and Fountain(Hosler) each scored within the next 5 minutes to push the Saints to a 5-0 lead.

"Kodi's goal may have been the nicest we've scored all season." said Egglefield. "It also got us going and fired up."

Courtney Boyea would close out the scoring with 4 minutes left pounding home another Abbey Lapage corner kick flicked on by Abbey Barnes for a 6-0 final.

Shelby Egnaczyk was called upon to make just one second half save for the Saints earning the shutout.

The Saints outshot Clinton 20-1 and finish the regular season at 9-3-1 in regional play and 9-4-1 overall.

"Seniors led the way tonight and thats a great way to close out their final game against them." said Egglefield. "They are the first to leave here able to say they never lost to them."

"Jessi, big Courtney, little Courtney, Abbey, Sammy, Sam, Marissa, Becky, Brenna, and Skyler... I don't think I could ever explain what they mean to and have done for this program or me for the last two seasons." said Egglefield. "To leave NCCC having gone to the Regional tournament both years is amazing... They did what hadn't been done for 27 years not once, but twice. They've set the standard for years to come and have done it with complete class."

The Saints will host Finger Lakes CC Saturday in the first round of Regionals. Time is TBA
