Saints Drop Close Contest to Corning

CORNING — Corning Community College's pesky 2-3 zone nagged North Country all game.

Despite leading for much of the first half, the Red Barons built a 29-25 lead at half time on their way to a 66-61 win Saturday.

Efrain DeJesus (14), Bernard Edwards (11), Devin Cooper (11) and Shawn Wedderburn (16) all finished in double figures for Corning. While the Saints struggled to shoot the ball, the Red Barons connected on four 3-pointers and drilled 16-of-29 free throws.

"They played a 2-3 zone the whole game, and we did not shoot the ball well," North Country coach Daryl Crist said.

"We got a lot of the shots we wanted, but our shots were not falling for us. We just have to move forward. The good thing is we get a chance (today). We have to stick together as a team."

Pacing the Saints was Damon Hunter, who hit two 3-pointers and finished with 19 points. Donta Crumpler recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Malik Wilkinson also grabbed 18 rebounds for North Country.

The Saints will face Finger Lakes on the road Sunday at 3pm.
